September 10, 2000 (09-10-00) Today is Sunday, and we went to Angkor Thom. I bought a shirt and the skirt that matched for this one lady. (you will be seeing a picture of her and my dad) (and also a picture of me in the outfit I bought) Then for dinner we went to this one place, I don't remember the name. Angkor Thom the final and most baroque creation of the Khmers was the Royal City and Angkor Thom, which consists of the central temple, the Bayon, a secondary and older temple called the Baphuon, and several elaborate terraced and victory enclosed within ancient city walls. Though several of the structures are older, the building frenzy of Angkor Thom reached its pinnacle during the reign of King Jayavarman VII, greatest of all Khmer constructionists and the final ruler before the Khmer empire collapsed into economic and spiritual ruin, Although much of the city has disappeared into the jungle, Angkor Thom once ranked among the most colossal cities anywhere on earth; a million people spread across an area of 10 square km, 12 km of massive walls and wide moats which protected the population against foreign marauders, an two immense artificial lakes (the Western and Eastern Barays) far vaster and more sophisticated then anything seen before in Asia. Angkor Thom was a planned city of greater complexity and spaciousness then any in medieval Europe - larger and perhaps more populous than the whole of ancient Rome. |
